To place in confinement, especially in wartime.

To gain from an ancestor, by right of birth, or through a bequest in a will.

Infidel

One who does not believe in a certain religion. Medieval crusaders referred to Muslims as infidels because they did not hold Christian beliefs.

Infantry

Soldiers armed and trained to fight on foot.

Industrialisation

The develpment of industry on a large scale. An economic system that is based on industry and the mass production of consumer goods is known as industrialism.

Indulgences

The Catholic practice of pardoning sins in return for a good deed - this was often paying a sum of money to the church.

Imperialism

Imperialism is when a country takes over new lands or countries and makes them subject to their rule.

Homesteader

Settler who moved onto the Plains under the terms of the Homestead Act 1862.

Homestead Act 1862

American Act which gave settlers 160 acres of land for a very small payment providing they built a house and lived on the land for at least five years.
