The name given to the Ancient Greek civilisation centred around the city of Mycenae

A man who lived in the mountain ranges of north-west America during the nineteenth century, making a living from trapping fur, guiding travellers. Mountain men were pioneers who charted unknown territory.

community of monks, bound to a life of religious devotion.

Militarism means that the army and military forces are given a high profile by the government.

Anglo-Saxon region of central England, settled by Angles in 500. Ruled by Offa 757-796. It was taken over by the Danes in 874.

Someone who buys things and sells them at a profit.

To act as a link or go-between, to try to settle differences between two or more parties.

Public celebration of the Eucharist (bread and wine) in the Roman Catholic Church and some Protestant churches

German prisoner of war camp for captured naval personnel. The word marlag is an abbreviation of the German marinelager.
