Medieval Life Online Lesson

Actual times taken for this activity will vary depending upon each pupil's ability. On each page there is a link back to the explanation page if pupil's need further explanation. The times given in this lesson plan are the times taken for a pupil of average ability to complete each task.

 

 Learning Outcome

To develop knowledge and understanding of life in Medieval Britain

To be able to present information learned in the form of a brochure

 Time   
 6 minutes  Introduce topic ( this may have been done in the classroom)

Recap Health and Safety guidelines for IT room.

Pupils to 'log on' and find beginning of lesson - http://www.historyonthenet.com/Lessons/medieval/medievalmain.htm or www.historyonthenet.com click on 'Resources', 'Online Lessons', 'Medieval Life Lesson'.

Remind pupils to read instructions carefully and to ask for help if they do not understand.  

When ready, click on 'Begin Lesson'.

 

 3 minutes Pupils to read the Feudal System explanation page. This could be done as a class activity with pupils clicking on the yellow boxes and reading aloud, or pupils can work independently, moving on at their own pace. 
 3 minutes Pupils then complete a missing word activity to check understanding
 3 minutes Pupils move on to Medieval Clothing. Read the explanation page, again either independently or as a whole class.
2 minutes To check understanding, pupils now have to complete a quiz about Medieval clothing.
6 minutes Pupils move on to learn about Medieval food.

They are shown a picture of a Baron sitting at his table in the hall of his manor house.  Clicking on areas of the picture will open a pop-up window with details about that item.

Each window must be closed before another is opened. The next arrow then takes pupils to an explanation of the food eaten by Medieval peasants.

4 minutes Understanding of Medieval food is checked with an interactive crossword activity.
3 minutes Pupils are now taken to an information page about Medieval housing.
22 minutes The remainder of the lesson is spent producing a brochure about Medieval Life.

Two templates are available for use - A publisher document which is the preferred choice, or a Word document.

Pupils need to remove the writing in the boxes and replace with their own words and pictures. They are welcome to use any of the pictures shown in the lesson.

 5 minutes Pupils to log off and leave the room clean and tidy
