Chronology Online Lesson

Actual times taken for this activity will vary depending upon each pupil's ability. On each page there is a link back to the explanation page if pupil's need further explanation. The times given in this lesson plan are the times taken for a pupil of average ability to complete each task.

 

 Learning Outcome To understand the meaning of the historical term - Chronology

To understand that the word Chronology derives from the Greek words 'chrono' and 'logos'

To be able to put times and dates into chronological order.

To see that a timeline is a chronology of dates and events.

To understand that a timeline is useful to give an overview of an historical period.

 Skills Developed Chronology and historical terms; Knowledge and Understanding; 
 Time   
 6 minutes  Introduce topic ( this may have been done in the classroom)

Recap Health and Safety guidelines for IT room.

Pupils to 'log on' and find beginning of lesson - http://www.historyonthenet.com/Lessons/chronology/chronologymain.htm or www.historyonthenet.com click on 'Resources', click on 'Online Lessons', 'Chronology Lesson'.

Remind pupils to read instructions carefully and to ask for help if they do not understand.  

When ready, click on 'Begin Lesson'.

 

 3 minutes Pupils to read chronology explanation page. This could be done as a class activity with pupils suggesting alternative methods for studying/measuring time.
 3 minutes Pupils to read timeline explanation page. Again this could be done as a class activity, talking through pupil's days.
 3 minutes Pupils move on to an exercise where they have to put times in chronological order by dragging them across the screen. They are told their score at the end of the exercise.
3 minutes The next exercise, in the same format as the time exercise, asks pupils to put dates into chronological order. 
8 minutes In preparation for the final exercise, a Chronology game, 'A Journey Through Time', pupils are shown four timelines spanning the years 1066 to 2000. They should be told to pay attention to the events and monarchs detailed on the timelines as the information will help them to complete the game.
20 - 30 minutes Pupils to play the Chronology Game - 'A Journey Through Time' - They are given choices of historical people or events which they have to choose in chronological order. They begin the game with 20 points and are awarded 5 points for each correct choice. However, if they make a wrong choice they lose 5 points. to win the game they must gain 100 points. All game winners can have their names entered into a 'Winner's Gallery'.
 5 minutes Pupils to log off and leave the room clean and tidy
